Rubbing noise from rear (and juddering under brakes)

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by mfranklin, Sep 16, 2012.

  1. Our 74 bus finally hit the road tonight after a year of serious welding etc, we bought it to restore so this is the first time I have driven it.
There is a slight rubbing niose coming from the rear, more pronounced when going round corners. This either turns into (or is accompanied by) a louder judder from the rear under braking.
The MOT is booked for Wednesday so I guess they might find the problem but does anyone have any ideas ?

Castle nut loose? Worn bearings? Loose wheel?

  3. Castle nut is well tight, as is the wheel.
I wondered about the wheel bearing as the rubbing changes tone the faster you go and is way more noticable as the weight shifts going round corners - but the judder under braking - would that be a bearing ?

  5. Wheel cylinders, bake plates and brakes all brand new

  6. Was gona say brakes not equalizing ?is that the right words...

  7. If the rubbing is coming from the brakes, the drums will probably get hot. Then you've got lots of choices such as sticking handbrake, oval drums, worn bearings etc. A search on here will give you lots to look at. The juddering might be unrelated but I'd check the hydraulics.

However just so you don't go crazy and it's not that, also check your speedo cable which runs through the front left hub isn't the cause. That one took me a long time to fathom out as the noise definitely sounded like it was from the rear.

  8. loose CV/driveshaft bolts??

  10. I renewed the backplates but the drums are the old ones - do you think that could be it ?

The plate's supposed to locate into the slot in the drums to keep water spray out. Rust slag build can up on the drums which catches the plate. If it's bad you should chip it off as it stays wet longer and accelerates the rust.

It's worse round corners because there is a little play in the rear bearings as spec - quite a lot really!
