Rubber mat set for under swivel seat.

Discussion in 'Camper Conversions' started by PeaSoup, Apr 2, 2012.

  1. Does anybody know where I can get a replacement rubber mat set for covering the under seat/front wheel arch area of a '76 Westfalia T2 which has a swivel seat and so no bulkhead?

I can find plenty of places selling replacement mat sets for vans with bulkheads (e.g. http://www.justkampers.com/shop/arch-side-mats-set-of-2-rubber-black-j13737.html), however these don't cover all visible areas on a van with a bulkhead removed.

    Thanks.

  2. Unfortunately no one makes them. I have seen people buy two and cut one to fit.

  3. Thanks for the reply pkrboo.

Had actually given up on trying to find a proper set of these and have already got hold of a second set in order to try and make something that covers the whole thing!

    Thanks again.

  5. Hello.

It worked out OK. Spent quite a bit of time figuring out how best to do it, but am quite pleased with the results.

I've a couple of photos from when I was doing it, and I've just been out a taken a few more to show the final results.

I got hold of a second one of the top mats (the one with the foam backing, rather than the one that wraps round the back/side of the seat base from JustKampers. They don't sell them separately, however they had a spare one laying around which they very kindly gave me - thank you very much JK!! Is probably worth asking them if they have another single one.

The one that wraps round the side/back I just put on as it should be. The top one I then put on as best I could as it "would" have been if the swivel base wasn't there - I had to cut it so that part of it slipped under the seat base, and the rest of it went over the top and round the swivel plate - you can see this in the second picture.

I then filled in the gaps left by cutting up the extra mat I had. On the extra bit for the back I peeled the foam off so that it sat better with the unfoamed lower proper mat, and on the top I removed a little bit of the foam at the front and side so that I could slip it in to the same gap (the metal flap!) that the side mat slips in to - I had to widened the gap with a screwdriver in order to get both mats in to it, and then hammered it back down tight once both mats were in place.

I stuck all the mats down with spray contact adhesive, and so hopefully they will stay nicely in place next to each other where I have filled the gaps.

Luckily I had kept the original bit of trim that pushes over the top of the lip at the back of the seat base - having this back on finished it all off nicely. This trim is quite easy to come by if you haven't kept yours - it's just the same as used in lots of other places in the Westies - plastic trim with a metal insert/grip to help it keep it's shape.

Hope this helps - let me know if you have any questions or want any more pictures.

    Thanks.
