I'm soon going to be making a full-length rack for my double cab from 15mm steel tube.
    I have two questions
    1. There will be no open ends all welded closed. Should I drill holes underneath to allow condensation out when the tube heats up in the sun, or is that a waste of time?
    2. Can you buy the plastic powder that when you heat the metal, then dip it puts a plastic coating on the metal? (For the feet that sit in the gutter)
I last used something like this in school back in the 70s.

You can probably still buy that powder but why not have it powder coated professionally?

Holes. Not needed unless your metal is pants or you want to keep the roof rack for thirty years!

Plastidip? Although I often glued thin rubber sheeting round the ends of the feet of my roofrack to spread the load ..

  5. Hello,
I've been working on my roof rack over the last few cold weeks (holder for offroad recovery boards, cable holder for solar, ...).
A lot of rusty water came out during the drilling - even though there was no visible hole for it to come in beforehand.
I then sprayed in some oil and wax - but no extra air conditioning. ;) These pipes would certainly withstood the rust for another 20 years...

You need to heat up the complete roof rack - do you have such a big oven at home?

I had it done, but it was quite expensive for large parts and with metal flake silver.
But I would rather paint it today. It can then be better repaired if damage occurs over a long period of time.

  6. I’d have it powder coated and spray cavity wax inside the tubes
It will last for years then.

I asked for a quote to get it powder coated.
    It will be approximately 4.5m x 1.5m
I was quoted £300 if in black add £60 for any other colour thing is I've tons of black metal paint as I get it free from work so free it is

I was just going to heat up the feet with a blow lamp then dip them.

Perhaps it’s easier to take it to a powder coaters and give someone a drink to put it on the line if there’s one nearby!
