So I know over the next few month/years I'm going to need to do some further work on Iris to get her up to scratch. I'm determined to keep using her as much as possible though as I don't want to end up with her off road for years. I'm currently thinking I'll try and tackle small sections myself as much as possible, however I won't be doing any of the paint myself. What is the best approach for this? Say for example I weld in a new rear corner, could I realistically apply rust treatment, any filler and then some sort of temporary layer of paint over this, which could then be sanded back later for final paint?
I guess what I really want to know is how far one would usually go with paint prep, assuming that the paint job would be done at a later stage by a pro? Would I be wasting my time applying primer? Any thoughts on this are appreciated. I'd rather find out now that the above is a stupid idea than get half way through and find out the hard way.

  2. You would need a non porus primer

I've run mine for 18 months in primer but not much of it is over bare metal bits here and there have surface rusted back through and they will now be taken right back before I paint it properly,
If you patch then prime and top coat even with rattle cans for now it should keep most of it at bay till you're ready to do a full paint job.
