Rodent damage...

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Ellihara, Apr 22, 2020.

  1. So - I've dealt with the mice (see earlier thread) but am now trying to repair the damage! The photo attached shows the underside of the hatch over the engine compartment which is where they got their nesting material from ... I obviously need to replace it, but can't work out what the material is called or where to get it from... can anyone advise?

    many thanks as ever...

  2. That original stuff looks like something highly flammable in a plastic bag, I’d replace with more modern fire retardant soundproofing

I think its lambswool. Based on an engine bay fire, I can assure you the plastic vapour seal burns, but the wool chars.

I drilled out the poprivets with a long flexi drive on my drill, pulled down the panel, which you already did and treated it to 30mm thick aluminium faced black closed cell foam rubber soundproofing,
Then reriveted covers with penny washers making sure that all metal to metal contact was either solid, or spaced off by foam bits. VW originally used sticky mastic between metal parts under the rivets.

The bus is a lot quieter inside.

  4. is that the soundproofing like you get for your boat?

  5. I've got some leftover Noisekiller lead sandwich sheets - would that work?
