RIP Yosser Hughes

  1. Bernard Hill has died aged 79 - bit of shock - starred in Boys from the Blackstuff many years ago and more recently Lord of the Rings and Titanic - RIP .

  2. He was due to be at Liverpool Comic Con this weekend so it must have come on suddenly.

  5. He used to live near Harleston, Norfolk and drink in the same pub as my father in law. No-one ever asked him about his work - just chatted about sport, weather etc. I think he liked not being mobbed and treated like a regular guy.

    You watch Boys From The Blackstuff now and it’s gut punchingly powerful 45 years later…..he was immense as Yosser in that.

    In that role he’ll leave a very polarised mark on everyone of an age…..despair/empathy/terror for many and sneering disdain and easily ignored for a privileged few.

  14. My dad made we watch boys from the black stuff when I was a kid it actually shaped my political opinion.
    Not much TV is that powerful anymore.
