I've replaced the light over the cab with LED already and i also want to do the same with the strip light in the back of my westy. I've seen the threads on here/thesamba where folks have pulled out the fluorescent gubbins and replaced with soldered-in leds, but tbh as mine doesn't fit very well and has a bust corner it makes more sense to put something new in there. If my van was all OG interior then maybe i'd keep it but its not so i'm less fussed about originality. Looking for a LED unit thats the same size and shape and won't look out of place in a 70's camper. This looks promising (Labcraft Trilite KL LED version): http://www.labcraft.co.uk/product/led-linear-trilite-dx_0-5-kl_0-5/ Or maybe this one, had been mentioned on some other TLB threads, looks ok but maybe too much white plastic on show?: http://www.furneauxriddall.com/acatalog/Twin-Interior-LED-Strip-Lamp-VA_822.html There is also a Hella item but as its 70 quid i'm pretty much going to rule that out from the start.. looks like the furneax riddal one above.. Anyone got one of the above? Any good? Any other suggestions before i buy something? Cheers Rob edit; not checked the dimensions of the labcraft unit yet..
Keen to know this too. Although the light is reasonably bright, and works, for some reason, mine runs off of the starter battery, and it's only a matter of time before it runs it flat!
I replaced the innards on mine with two led strips from Maplins, bit of hot glue action and I ended up with a warmer light with 30% of the current draw...
yep, i had these type for the cab light - masive difference in the "feel" vs. the cold blue-ish leds.
Is the labcraft one warm white? I didn't spot anything in the specs, and it looks on the cool side of white to me - though it's hard to tell from pictures. I do lighting design for theatre and live events as a bit of a sideline, so have a reasonable eye for colour temperature. We have the Furneaux Riddall one in our van to replace a Devon strip light. At the time, it was the only LED fitting I could find which definitely stated warm white. You can also buy Fluorescent tubes in different colour temperatures, which can vary from a cold white through to a warm white.
What these ones ? How many did you use ? http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/white-12v-5cm-led-strip-n87cz I've been thinking of upgrading mine too, the tubes I have are starting to flicker
Mine was creating so much heat and light they melted!! Limited edition Westfalia Salvador Dali light. Must be worth a few quid. I am looking to rewire this winter so very timely thread.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/T5-LED-Tu...hash=item5d40390d91:m:mGuqLDiETIEDtz99hMqNb-A I used something like this (not sure thats the exact one so please double check sizes!) - straight fit no messing, a bit whiter than usual but not clinically so....
Was it a straight swap ? If so, Which one did you get? I want to change the small cab light but still use the headliner back board with minimum faffing.
It was just a change of bulb to a led type. I'll post a link to the one I bought when I'm. Back on the PC.
my cab light was a bit temperamental, so i got a new one, hella, made in china but tbh the quality is fine: http://www.ebay.com/itm/191227079760 £9 quid. As my timber headlining is a bit fatter than og i changed the profile of the clip thing with a square file to get it to sit right.. didn't want to try that on my original unit incase i broke it but happy to experiment on a nine quid ebay item. fitted this bulb to it..: http://www.ebay.com/itm/311310533483 direct replacement for the original incandescent bulb. only cost a couple of quid, warm light.. doesn't get hot and uses a fraction of the power.
here's the new labcraft trilite led unit next to the westy item: Labcraft LED Trilight vs. OE Hella fluorescent Westfalia interior light. by Rob E, on Flickr Labcraft LED Trilight vs. OE Hella fluorescent Westfalia interior light. by Rob E, on Flickr the new one is a little longer and a bit wider, but still fits the space perfectly. Wired it up in the van and it looks great. The LED's are bright white (not warm but still ok, at least they're not blue-ish like some i've seen..) and significantly brighter than the og hella fluorescent unit. I'll take a pic of it in the van tomorrow.
