Let's have a VW related thread for a change... Has anyone changed their own valve guides on type 4 heads successfully? And could it be done without freezing the new guides, as I have no freezer in the workshop.... The engine in question is a W code 1700 if it makes any difference. Thanks.

Prob possible without a freezer but it might help... took me 2 goes messed up first time easy as second time.. no mandrel used a punch but you could use an old valve... Make sure everything is spotless.. I gave it a quick wire wool clean and oiled the guides... they slid in great with a light push don't hammer.... it made my valve seats fall out when I tried that!.. seats will need a grind to lap the valves in as the new guide can be a fraction off the old location... Good luck and don't pick up the head without gloves on and drop it! or they'll need a quick fly cut to remove the dent! Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk
Cheers. I have just been reading your thread, and scared myself when I saw your first attempt! Did you ever work out what went wrong on the first attempt? I wonder if the Mrs will let me do it on the kitchen table..
Think it was just not clean enough.. doesn't take much to jam it and I had read an impact driver was a good idea.... don't.. it's not. Just clean the bore, blow it out... get the black and decker work mate outside the back door .. get the oven roasting hot... the smell of cooking heads doesn't linger long gides in jiffy bags with oil in the freezer you'll be done before anyone knows. ...don't worry about the oil it won't freeze on the outside and make it difficult.. might not even need it.. ...and if you've not pulled the old ones out yet.. new fangled machine shops can ream out and screw in a new sleeve guide into the old one... I'm told....but where's the diy fun in that.. Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk
Excellent. Cheers for the tips I live in a top floor flat, so don't have an outside area to work in, and my workshop is 5 miles away.. think I am going to have to suggest the wife might like a night out with her mates..
I had a test with a spare .. didn't work for me, couldn't line it up well enough probably Sent from my SM-T580 using Tapatalk
I would try a different stye of cramp without the swivel foot. Add heat and frozen guides it shoud work.
