Replacing Shift Rod Bushes on 1977 Bay at Techenders

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by SeanOC, Mar 15, 2017.

  1. Hi All,

How practical is it to have to replace the shift rod bushes on a 1977 bus with a Type 4 engine & relevant manual gearbox?

Can they all be done easily or if not which ones can't be done?

  2. Front bush(snigger) and rear coupler could be done, the shuttlecocks on the middle of the gear rod need the engine and box removing as they have to be drawn out from the rear.

  3. just did my front and rear bush , what made a huge differance though was the stock lever goes through a large ball the gearstick pivot mine was super worn( the hole through the ball pivot ) i swappedit out for a csp shifter and its like a bloody rally car now . best 250 i ever spent .

  4. Not sure that I'm brave enough to do that in a field. Especially as I've never pulled an engine before!

It is most likely that the problems with wonky gearchange are the front bush and the rear coupler both of which are accessible with varying levels of effort without pulling the engine in half a day or less...

If the problem persists then you need to go to the full engine out by which time you should collect together all the engine tidy up and gearbox exterior tidyup jobs and do it over several days so you can identify parts you need and order them and fit them in a leisurely manner.
