Replacing pulley on 78 2.0 litre alternator - advice please

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Banjoblue, Jul 19, 2013.

  1. I'm changing the alternator this weekend. I don't have a flywheel puller and I'm a bit worried about getting the pulley on and off. Any tips? How do I stop the alternator shaft spinning to tighten the nut holding the pulley on?

    Thanks

You probably don’t mean a flywheel puller because you don’t need to remove the flywheel to replace the alternator.

You shouldn’t need a puller to remove the alternator pulley, it should pull off once the nut is slackened, or may need a tap or two. There are either flats or a square on the back of the pulley boss for a spanner or use an old fan belt in the pulley gripped in a vice.

  3. That's really good to know! Thanks for that.

  4. All went well, got the old alternator out easily enough. bit fiddly but I'd taken the adjusting bracket off before because it was warped beyond use and when I'd put it all back together I'd coppaslipp'd the fixings. Then I looked at the new alternator from VW Heritage. Wouldn't spin. Would turn and then jam in two different spots. Total junk. Phoned them. They'll have somebody phone me Monday. Nothing available locally so that's this weekend lost, and I'm away next weekend so it won't be done then. Great.
