Repairing Devon Poptop Canvas

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by SeanOC, Jul 22, 2020.

  1. The seal on my Devon pop-top canvas has given way and I’m trying to work out the best adhesive to use.
Does anyone know what material these canvases were made out of please?

  2. Think it's some kind of flexible vinyl or pvc.

Ask a sail maker what is best to glue it together with or to do it

  3. May need to be stitched & then sealed from inside and outside.

My replacement Devon roof canvas, seems to have been melted together at the joins. Sonic welding?

It had some tiny holes where it joined, which I sealed with some caravan silicon type stuff.

  4. I'd stitch it with nylon thread - IF - it hasn't torn along the holes ??
It's plastic - the same as mine and any glue or silicone will either not take , be too rigid or too brittle .
At least that's the trouble I had ...[IMG]

I stitched the seam and rubbed a candle along to waterproof the repair , t'was only 6 inches long though .

  5. On closer inspection it looks like the split isn't along a sewn seam but originally glued which is different to how mine is constructed - same material but a different approach so maybe there is a glue out there ?

After a research I used HH66 vinyl cement on mine..and my canvas is in really bad shape so no other option atm just to glue it all back tohether..I must say so far so good..its really good stuff just a bit expensive but still cost way less then new canvas..
