repainting bottom half

  1. I'm going to get started soon on the second half of my repaint. I did all the upper half plus the insides of the doors in Pastel White last winter and now I'm going to start on the lower section in Mexico Beige.

I suspect I'm going to have to take all the doors off again but want to try and avoid this unless it's vital, so I want to know if anybody has done a decent job this way, using that foam masking tape? The part that troubles me most is how you'd tackle the flat edges of the front doors, and then the step wells and sides of the B pillars.

Loads of people do this and the results look good , but for the sake of a few bolts why not take the doors off ?.

  3. ^^^^what he said mite as well take them off will take longer to mask them up with them on , take them off and cover the bits your not painting ,will be easier to mask of the van I think

  4. That's the thing, I've developed an aversion to masking after taking the windows and doors out last time. Took days wrapping the doors and blocking up the openings. So I'm looking for shortcuts which don't compromise the final result too much. I know I have to take the door handles off so that's the internal panels off yet again.

It's easy to see how a professional paint job costs so much. I reckon I put in 150-200 hours on the top section alone.

You'll have to take them off, mask up and do the shuts, and the edges of the doors, then re-hang, mask and do the rest in one hit to ensure you get an even coverage right round the van. Different paint thickness can affect the tone with many colours and it can show up if you paint the doors seperately.

  6. yeh - I guess I knew there wasn't an easy answer
