Depending on the manifolds it can be very difficult though.

It really doesn't. Makes me appreciate my rubble/earth based sloping car park, at least it's private.

  3. Why take the manifolds off? Just unbolt the carbs.

Two bolts that are easier (IME) to access than the 4 holding the carb to the manifold. Particularly putting back together. Type-4 I do other way round and take the carb off, there's no fan housing in the way.

  5. Just checked on mine - you're right. Manifold off on a type 1!

  7. I'd forgotten I'd bolted mine on before the engine went back in.

It would seem that that makes it easier in some respects and more expensive if you make a mess and the engine ends up tilting...

It would seem that the correct tool is something like an offset ring spanner, or one of the stubby ring spanners you can get
    offset spanners :

    C shaped stubby spanner set : https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/13231793...uid=EQOYZ9GYR8i&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

the second set looks like it would be useful regardless of what is on the manifolds. .

I wish you wouldn’t show links to stuff that we don’t need, but somehow now want.

I got very close to clicking buy on the second set of C shaped spanners... :)
