Recommendations for a rolling road somewhere down south East for tuning Webers

  1. Hello there -

looking for genuine recommendations for people you have used to tune your carbs on a rolling road.

I went to one place (they shall remain nameless) and their answer was to change my timing so it was way out! :(

Have generally heard great reports about Tom Airey (http://www.aireytuning.com/), but seen a couple of odd comments on a few other forums.

Who have you used and would reccomend? Willing to travel reasonable distances from Surrey (150 miles each way)

(P.S. I have a carb balancer, the weber tuning manual and have researched it loads - I simply want it done on a rolling road and to be done right ;) )

    Thanks in advance

  2. Probably a bit far from you but by spooky coincidence I am dropping my bus off at Dynotech in Ripley (just north of Derby) to have my twin webbers set up on a rolling road. They were suggested by Paul Weeding for on here and are a weber agent as well as a tune.

I will let you know how I get on. They reckon it might take a couple of days before I get my van back as I have DCNFs and there is a possibility they may need to order bits in as mine are less common carbs.

Is North Bristol / Tewkesbury too far?

I'll be taking mine to Airey when ready - rolling road is the onlt way to go.

You'll always find a couple of odd/negative comments whoever you go for.

I'll get you the name of the place that did mine when I get back to the UK on Friday.
They did a blinding job, took it to 58 bhp by setting it up right.
The guy builds air-cooled engines so knows what he's doing.

Good work, that saved me a job!
Jason really knows his stuff; my van was like new after he'd sorted my twin solex'.
    I'd recommend them.

  12. Hi Andy

Have fun at Airey, it will be money well spent.

My bus went on the Dynotech dyno today and has new jets on order which will go in tomorrow hopefully to finish the job. Those who went to Techenders might remember it had a persistent pop sound from the exhaust that was driving me nuts and I couldn't get it running quite right. I spent ages trying to find air leaks to no avail.

Well Mr Dynotech reckons it was producing 55 BHP at first as it was running too lean and the carbs needed synching. By the end of today it was knocking out 81 BHP (Yippee!!) and thats before the new jets go in. Oh and the popping noise is gone!

I cannot wait to get it back and have a drive.

  16. Okay bit of an update.

Went to see Tom Airey and came away with a much better driving van.
Apart from substantially changing the size of the mains in the carbs, there was not much else changed. The difference in take-off and general cruising is quite noticeable.

I haven’t had chance yet to do a long journey so I can assess the MPG, but I am keeping my fingers crossed it hasn’t made it worse!

Tom was also quick to point out that the carbs were not getting full throttle due to the cable having stretched and reckoned that once I sort that I will notice an even bigger difference as the carbs aren’t fully opening up.

He also suggested that I should follow the throttle linkage from pedal to rear to make sure all as should be.
I noticed my pedal is the original and doesn’t appear to have a return spring fitted. (another job for the list)

So overall it wasn’t exactly cheap, and Toms workshop is a little under-whelming, but I got the feeling I got my money’s worth and the van drives better. The real test is going to be the MPG which I will report back on in a week or so after I have taken a trip to Wales.

    :)
