rear light lenses

  1. i bought two new rear lenses but have noticed that both of them have a white reverse section. Im thinking maybe i should only have one with a reverse lens and the other should have a foglight section, would this be right? my bus never had either a reverse or fog lamp, but i may add them in the future if what i think about the lenses is correctalso if it is right, which light goes on which side, is it foglight to offside? 79 year model if that makes a difference

fog lights not required pre 1981? so were never fitted hence none in lens

  3. i have two reversing lights , never thought about fog lights really but not a bad idea , id be inclined to have two of each thou coz can look like motorbike if not ??

if it bothers you you can either fit a red bulb in the offside or fit a danbury bumper mount foglight

  5. and a foglight will require seperate switching (obviously) and a dashboard warning light too. One thing, using the same cluster may not give the correct visual seperation between it and the other lights since as has been stated pre 81 they were never fitted. A reversing light either side does work very well, so they should as they were a factory option.

  6. Should have 2 lower white lenses which are for reverse. I'm guessing VW installed the reverse light fittings as an option but you got lenses for free
    :)

  7. Two reversing lights is normal. New-fangled rear fogs hadn't been invented when Bays appeared in the late 60s.

  8. ok cheers all of you, two reversers it is then. might wire them up in the year 2525. i was just trying to sort my rear lights when i began to wonder.....

  9. Fit really bright bulbs for that extra photon drive up hills

  10. Obviously you can wire one up to reverse and one up to fog and just use an über bright red bulb. I have a monster Hella rear fog lamp about the size of a dinner plate. If you miss me in the dog you were either already blind, or blinded by the über brightness of the fog lamp
    :)

  11. There seems to be four sections to a rear light, well mine anyway, top to bottom, indicator, brake/side, unused then reversing.
I have a few of the bulb holders spare so i was thinking of fitting the fog into the offside unused part, using a red bulb, any reasons against this?

  12. Your lenses should go: indicator/reflector/side and brake/reversing from the top. The reflector's a legal requirement.

For a fog light, you really should have a diffusing lens over it, or folk just will love you in the fog ;). Just hang a fog light under the rear bumper.

  13. EFA ;)

  14. Seriously though, was there ever a more misused piece of kit on a car than a rear fog light?

  15. Nope. I'm often blinded by folk who turn them on when there's a bit of a chill in the air. Folk don't realise how bright they are at eye-level...
