Weve been fighting excessive rear wheel bearing play & replaced one side with a completely brand new Febi set as described in this thread http://www.thelatebay.com/index.php?threads/rear-stub-axle-question.26535/#post-440681 If you read through, the new bearings we fitted up was even worse than the old worn ones - there is a video clip showing how bad they where..even JK showed some worry when I spoke to them! Our solution was to fit a taper roller bearing on the outside, using the correct one on the inside - the cylindrical spacer had to be surface ground back slightly (about 0.35mm) to allow the castle nut to reduce the play to virtually nothing and allow the split pin in. We're in the process of bedding in & trialling this set up now!
I was always told they should have a little play when cold as this allows for expansion when there warm from the heat the brakes make I dont know how true this is its just what i was told
a little play yes, we had 8mm all in on a brand new never been used pair of bearings, torqued up correctly..its been a flaming nightmare sorting it out!
Jeez MorkC that's harsh, glad its sorted. Bus wheel bearings have what appears to be excesive lash. What Para says is right. Take no notice of Poppy when he says easy and four bolts in the same sentence.
How many times did you take that to work and skim it though? Not a practical solution for most people.
If those bearings where used on a lathe or some form of surface grinder, precision machining would be out of the question!!
We got it spot on the third grind, the hardest part was the constant stripping down & rebuilding but Major lives at work with us now, its 20 miles each way from work to home so it gave them time to bed in..not ideal, not practical but if it works successfully then fine..if not, we can always rebuild it back to stock (the sleeves are available)!
not sure on play from cold to allow for heat etc as the bearing middles are torqued up to 250 lbsft the only play should be beween the races and bearing and this should be virtually none , any heat will expand the bearing as one with the hub etc . Mork you must have a split nut like the front ? and not torqued it up ?
I think he's adjusted the thickness of the spacer by trial and error, so when the castle nut it torqued up the wheel can still spin but without too much play.
I had the same experience ,it failed the re-test after putting new bearings in ,told the mot tester he could do the job as well as getting the wiper to touch all the screen [another fail]...Came back two days later and there was the new mot ,i looked at the wiper [no different]and the guy said he had a re-think... I just rolled my eyes...
This is the only van I've had where the wipers touch all if the swept part of the screen, without any assistance from me!
