1977 tp 1600 panel Went out in "hetty" yesterday running great on a roundabout clunk clunk clunk. Pulled over checked cv joints and nothing obvious. Carried on perfect then 5 miles later in a straight line thud thud thud for 1/2 a mile then quiet. Drove another 5 miles perfect. Had a good look underneath all looked ok. Left for home.... 5 miles out clunk clunk pulled in nothing.. 10 miles and rumbling thuds again. Then quiet then 5 miles later same again. Reversed up drive had a click. Straight line or cornering is the same but dip clutch and noise goes. Crankshaft seal is likely gone from dripping between engine and box. Ive had all wheels off drums off all look ok spin each wheel no noise. Back on ground push van back and forward 2 x out of 10 click click!! (Having crank seal and pushrod tubes done next week) Any ideas? Thanks Sent from my SM-G925F using Tapatalk
Cv joint. Or handbrake assembly falling apart and bits orbiting the drums or whacking the back of the studs on the hub. This noise will change if you pull the handbrake out. Oil seals just drip. If its clattering from terninal endfloat, that changes as you push in the clutch and it leans on the crank and pushes it back. Dont forget that pushrod tubes dont leak if stretched to specification, fitted with new clean seals and smeared with a little oil and gently twiddled into clean holes in the engine block and heads. Silicone is not needed. Also check clipped on cylinder air deflector plate isnt buzzing a hole in the top of a tube... had that happen.
Had drums off all brakes look ok. End float good and it makes the noise with engine off and rolling back and forth. Wil be taking drive shafts off weekend and see. If dry or worn. Sent from my SM-G925F using Tapatalk
Just in case....any recommendations on decent cvs or complete drive shafts? Sent from my SM-G925F using Tapatalk
I would say cv joint as well. If it's a bearing, you will normally see shiney bits on your back plate where the drum has been rubbing on it.
When first heard the noise i thought cv joint, just odd that it comes and goes? Going to pull them off and see next. Sent from my SM-G925F using Tapatalk
UPDATE Had it on the jack driving up through gears and reverse and couldn't replicate noise again typical! So striped drive shafts out hot wash and repacked with moly grease. One side had a bit of grease in the other side had hard v old grease! So needed doing anyway. Only time will tell if fixed but shafts slide nicer now lubed up Sent from my SM-G925F using Tapatalk
No doubt somebody will helpfully be along later to advise on the gearbox, possibly offer to fix it for you even....
