Rear brakes

  1. hi how difficult is it to replace or maintain rear brakes on a 1972 crossdresser? As I believe that the rear drums are hard to remove?

My handbrake is pretty useless and I want to strip out and inspect maybe refine the rear brakes, advise please

  2. Mine is a 72 build date and it gave me few problems servicing them, it all came apart no problem but do take some snaps of how the shoes fit and avoid the brake lining dust
Post some pics (wheel off) so we can all have a look

  3. Take the drums off and take a picture of the components, you can reference them against the pics on JK site to figure out why brakes you have. Mines a late '72 and that's what I had to do to make sure I ordered the right bits.

  4. Nice one I have a go are the drums easy to remove?

Yes if they are not too rusted otherwise the shoes will hold them on in which case it is difficult.
In other words if they have come off recently : fairly easy. If not then a lot of work may be needed to ease them off with shoes loosened off...

  6. Back off the adjusters before you try to get the drums off.
