took the mrs car for mot at a local place, 1st mot in probably 10 years i didn't know the tester and have to sit in reception instead of diverting the tester away from dodgy bits...... i'm sat here like an expectant father.

  2. When I took my car for it's MOT in February, I was amazed how long it took - I thought they took about half an hour but that one was an hour. I find them really stressful for some reason - despite the car only being 4 years old and in good condition. I was sat thinking all sorts could be wrong - totally without reason.
The van on the other hand I almost expect to fail, but I have left it at my mechanics for other work prior to both tests and he put's it in to the garage next door. Nice surprise yesterday - PASS and NO advisories save for potentially binding brakes which he's sorted.

  3. Is it not the case a vehicle owner must be allowed to view the mot taking place ?(re RR"s comment about being left in reception)

  4. They all have a viewing area, which often more than not is a window in the reception. You're no longer allowed (for 'health and safety reasons') by most garages to be under the vehicle with the tester.

Congrats on inexpensive pass @rickyrooo1 :)

In Spain you have to drive your own car through the MOT., or ITV as we Spaniards say :)
You have a walky talky attached to your window and the tester instructs you what to do. It is a bit stressful as its hard to follow English through one, let alone Spanish!
My most stressy part was when the tester is in the pit instructing you to brake and turn the steering etc. I once had a guy shouting at me so loud other customers came to see what was happening :) I explained that I couldn't understand what he was saying and didn't want to turn the wheel incase his hands were in the way.
I think I failed on that occasion !

took for retest this morning bloke didn't even look at new spring just printed pass off! (i must have a honest face) if i'd have known he wasn't gonna look i wouldn't have fixed it

  13. Taking my Merc for it's MOT later to the same place I took the bus. I bet they don't have the same "relaxed" attitude to a modern car!:(

  14. it's ok to have this attitude to health and safety, but....
until recently i worked for a national chain of garages. one customer in on of the north eastern sites was in the workshop whilst his car was having an mot.
despite being told to stand clear and remain in the viewing area etc he kept walking round the car whilst it was being tested. the tester told him to move away, the ramp controls were on the other side of the ramp to the viewing area. as the car was being lowered the guy went to get something out of the car. the type of ramp was an automated scissor lift for one man testing and it is sunk into the floor by 6-8 inches. the ramp was lowered, his toes were over the edge of the gap...
that's right, he lost all his toes and a part of his foot.
HSE got involved and the garage was absolved of all blame but the guy couldnt get his toes back! workshop viewing areas were removed and cctv viewing was installed in the reception areas.
so when customers are told not to enter workshops etc there is a good reason. not only to prevent accidents but also so the garage doesnt have to have the HSE and all the paperwork, risk court action, get fined or worse all because people cant do as they are asked. because of incidents such as this and much worse we have to treat all customers the same as the dumbest ones out there.

he did let me under it to show me the spring and the other bits and bobs, to be fair the car is 13 years old and it's probably the last mot it will see - certainly from us, the plan is to stick 6 months tax on it this month and sell it for whatever.....

  16. Oh don't get me wrong, I know why the rules are there, and don't disagree. There are some stupid and careless people out there. I think I was trying to say that some garages do dispense with the protocol if the tester knows you and like with Ricky wants to point something out.

  17. It's because the mot is on a 1 hour time slot from when they put the car on the ramp and set the computer up which is logged with dvl a .

  18. I take it back it passed with just a couple of easy to sort advisories:chewie::chewie::chewie:
