I dont need glasses !!!!!!! I end up using the old army map reading trick for small detail, I make a teeny tiny hole between the ends of both thumbs and fore fingers, look through it with one eye and focus it in or out, but I dont neeed glasses, Im now going to turn the computer off before the wife sees this post!
I keep a monocle in my wallet. Saves leaving the 99p store +1.5 reading glasses everywhere and it works for a quick check on dipstick oil levels . If the internet or power ever goes down id have to use those cheapo glasses to read something they used to call ‘a book;’...otherwise just turn up the light on the screen Don’t really need glasses that much as at my age I’ve seen it all before.
Yes they can fit new lenses to your old frames, the optician just pops the old lenses out and draws round them as a template and sends it off with the prescription, that's what Boots do with mine.
I was reading the other day that the increased use of computer screens in lockdown has had a detrimental impact on kids eyes so suspect it's similar for old gents like you too. No idea if you can reuse frames, but would imagine it's a distinct possibility if you go back to the same optician as you purchased from. I usually get one half decent pair from the optician then all the others I buy from Specs4less. they seem OK and are considerably cheaper. I have also used another online retailer for sports sunglasses. My optician didn't note PD on the prescription but you need that to buy online. The second time I got an eye test I leant over his shoulder and made a note of it myself.
So just been in, fair play, zero pressure sell and £10 for the test. Apparently I need such a slight adjustment I should give my current ones a go, or carry on without. They can measure my current ones for free, and assess if I need new frames, but I’ve just spoken to a friend and he knows a guy that makes prescription lenses and retro fits to old frames. I’ll dig out the paperwork and compare each prescription. Grateful to you all for the advice, I’ll go in stages but it’s good to see I won’t need to drop the soap in the shower for glasses at a decent price.
Just as an aside, my friend owns a factory that makes glasses and supplies all the local opticians even specsave on occasion for designers glasses. They do bi focals varifocals and all the specialist glass ones. Dearest one she sells to them £12!
So all the people who say Specsavers glasses are not as good as the “proper” optition are wrong? Regarding using old frames. I don’t know, but I would imagine that the frames get more brittle in time, so if they get broken during the glazing process, the optician will get a demand for new frames from the customer, free of charge.
Does that just work with the metal frames where there’s those tiny grub screws holding the lens in, or can they do it with one piece moulded frames do you know??
Every type of frame or lens imaginable. She made my wife’s £400 glasses for £5. She would have made them for specsave if my wife had ordered them through them instead of giving her the prescription and they wanted £400.
She isn’t alone. If you ever speak to someone who works at or owns a company that makes spectacles ask them, it’s the same with loads of expensive medical stuff.
I’d suggest we’ve been fleeced by the specs providers for years. The price of something like Chinese reading glasses more accurately reflects the true cost of frames, I’d imagine.
