ok folks i"m holding my hands up to my lack of scene knowledge hear, i"ve had my bay quite a few years now and i"ve ended up living in it for a variety of reasons , so i tend to spend most of my spare cash on parts to keep her running ,or at least starting, cos major stuff in layby"s >>let"s say "tiring" anyhow, love this scene so could you people tell me the definition of a "rat" bus ? is it a)one that just scrapped thru it"s mot ? or is it a tight vehicle that looks tatty? c)combination of both > d)other ? cheers for info /advice.
we have a 'Rat' beetle. I think ' tight' is a good way to descibe most rats. Mine is solid underneath, mechanically spot on, solid body, with a rusty look to it. It probably has less real rust than some of the shiny 'show and shine' bugs out there. ours is the black one
I've always thought a rat bus has something done to it to make it look a rust bucket rather than someone not looking after their bus. As said above rats seem to be mechanically and structurally sound but just look like they are going to fall apart
I appreciate the original patina type vans and the stories they tell However i dont understand at all making tidy looking busses worse Its spreading aswell i saw a saxo the other day that had been bare mettaled left to corrode then laquered WTF is that all about
Brett if thats what you want sell yours and buy a ratty bus dont ruin yours White westy poptop on a rat bus wouldent look right
Also it seems to be creeping into parts for sale ads/auctions, usually used to describe a part that is Marmite.
This is our Rat - Ratilda. A 67 bug. She is a cleaner Rat. http://thelatebay.com/index.php?topic=192.0
