R&r bed hinges fitting advice

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Diddymen, Feb 10, 2013.

  1. Got some hinges, think they are early westie copies?

Just wondered if any one had any pics of how they fix to the van

They appear as if they fix to the top cargo area floor and the wheel arch, the wheel arch fixings look like they should be small self tapping screws which seems a bit inadequate if you ask me

Ill try and post some pics when I get home

The hinges are fixed to the woodwork for the bed, the small fixings are simply to hold the bed in the van, rivnuts for the top, 5 or 6mm is fine, same again on the arches , yours are late westy hinge repros

  3. thanks David,

heres some pics of how I think they go, can you confirm if this looks right?

and the top fixing I was going to fix in the last recess in the upper cargo floor - just this one fixing at the top? (think it looks 8mm hole)

and then the lower fixing - just through the 2 small holes in the bracket through the wheel arch?

are they the only fixings holding the seat in the bus?

Not the only fixings, you also bolt the wooden base to the floor, the brackets look a bit far apart, you have to allow for the width of the bed when rocking and rolling as the boards hit the windows if you make the bed to wide, when you wanna come and measure up? ;)

  5. :D possibly sunday ? :D

cant do saturday as it is one of my boys birthdays

how does the wooden base connect to the hines then?

Do you still have the bit of wood I gave you? That was a side panel it's what the hinges bolt to, they are then fixed to the bed front and base, easy peasy, it will all be clear when you come, if you bring some wood withe you we cam pretty much make the thing it half an hour :)

  7. no, I gave that bit back to you and I didnt get round to making a template from it :(

not sure I'll be able to get the wood for sunday

catch 22 really, I need to know the sizes to et the wood lol :D

  10. thanks mate......will I get them in a zafira :D

what sort of thickness should I get?

  11. Where did you get those from. I have the JK type and these (ie yours) are a much better hinge by virtue of the top bracket which will help prevent any rolling forwards and it should be more secure. Also the wheelarch fixings are as per Westy. You going full width or 3/4? Got some plans for similar which might help. If you PM me your email will send em but let me know where you got hinges from as I would swap mine out and fit those, much better. (edited and docs attached below)

  12. well that worked. Hope this helpd in some way but this is for 3/4. Full width - just add the extra width to the boards and make two arch panels!

Not sure I need to credit JK with these drawings but if so then ta JK.

  13. thanks Dicky thats a great help :)

I'll be making a full width bed (on Mrs Diddymens orders :D)

the hinges I think were JK ones - but they came with my bus nearly 4 years ago and I dont know how long they had them before I got the bus!! but it appears they have changed the design since then :(
