Hi all, I'm (well my wife is!) at the stage of upholstering/covering the bed foam on our R&R bed. I have the full width Rusty Lee bed and a set of 4" foam from delilah (Thank you to both of you who offer a great service!) My question is, do most people remove the boards and upholster directly to them and therefore make the foam cushions non removable or do people upholster the foam independently of the boards and then somehow fix it to the boards maybe with strong velcro or something? Hope that makes sense! Pictures welcome! Matt
Thats a damned devisive question. Ive upholstered the boards and prefer that (Westy style). I have to say it is useful to have removeable for when Im using it as a van. Believe upholstered is safer for kids - so Im told!
keep the cushions loose so that you can remove the covers as and when to wash them. If they're reversible (like those of a Devon) then you can use both sides to even up any wear. These cushions are the original devon ones and are independent of the boards of the bed - they are not secured by anything except the small retaining rims at the front. They don't really move tbh
I covered the board and then covered the cushions separately, the material together means they dont slip with the kids sat on them
I was concerned about this. Wouldn't want people sliding out under the seatbelts. Anyone gone for Velcro?
We hired a split a few years ago with a Devon interior and the cushions were all over the place when I cornered! Eventually adapted my driving style so it was less "small hatchback" and more "u-boat" and that resolved the problem! After that we felt fixed cushions would be right!! Our plan with our bay is upholstered cushions on a Volkswares frame with a big pocket type fitting (a little like dogsndubs van). mainly vinyl with fabric inserts and lots of Scotchguard!
I asked the same question a few weeks ago and someone suggested loose cushions for the reasons suggested above but rather than velcro use a long zip with one of the sides is stapled to the board, if that makes sense?
I'm pretty sure that if you have seatbelts on the bed seats the cushions have to be secured to the boards/bed frame to prevent passengers sliding out with the cushions under the seatbelts in the event of an accident or emergency stop. If you want the covers to be removable for washing you could fix them on with poppers rather than staples
Im going for loose cushions with removable for washing covers but im going to strap them in place with polyproperlene webbing and plastic clips The same sort of thing thats used on large rucksack waist belts
i had to have mine fastened to the boared as the bolt heads on the rnr bed would of damage the fabric,
Has anyone else got a Rust Lee bed? I can't see a way of reattaching the boards to the frame from the underside if they were removed, re-upholstered and re attached (without drilling new holes into the frame)
Hi Matt, what you want to do is redrill from the underside, that how we do it, straight through the framework and then you can screw into the board
we use t nuts, hammer them into the top of the boards before covering then bolt up from the other side
We didn't want to see the edge of the wood so I whipped it out covered it & screwed it back on, it's countersunk so screw heads don't stick out & has worked a treat for us but to be fair we were always working on a budget but we are very happy with the result... Hope this helps
