Quick release nut/bolt

Discussion in 'Restorations' started by AndyC, Jan 18, 2015.

  1. I'm in need of four quick release nuts and bolts. If they exist.

Two need to be quite long (2" ish) and two are quite short (1" ish). <--- [Queue jokes.....]

The only type of quick release bolts that I can find are the ones used to hold bicycle wheels on.
But these are no use, as what I need it the nut to come off of the bolt quickly.
    The nut must come off.

Anyone know of anything that's out there that'll do this, or anything else?

  2. wing nut...

  3. Still involves turning it around 100 times. LOL.

I've been looking at 1/4 turn fasteners, but can't see how I can get them to work easily.

  4. you could look at quarter turn fixings maybe ?

  5. Dzus fasteners, google them:thumbsup:

  6. Had a look at the quick release stuff, but I'm struggling to work out what it is that I need..... :/

I just need something as close to a nut and bolt as possible. :/

  7. Yep - dzus will do the job - I have them on the battery hatch of my MG - I have also seen similar on the engine fairings of light aircraft.

  8. Frequently spotted on race fairings for many a year .

  9. What's on the other side? Struggling to find the "nut" part.

The "nut is just a piece of bent wire riveted onto the back of whatever it the thing fastens to.

I've just read my post. It's not as gash as it sounds. The "nut" part is a proper thing not just a bit of bent wire.

  12. Here you go , various way of locking but this is the common one :-

As you turn the fastener the `screw` tightens onto the locking plate - which is usually rivitted in place .

Google images and you`ll get the idea ...

  14. Ah just reread, 4 :)
If you can wait until tomorrow evening i will have a look

  15. Yeh, just need four.

Two of one length, two of another.

  16. Does it HAVE to be riveted, or will it hold in place without riveting?

  17. It will clip over a lip as the retainer bit is U shaped, in the pic you are looking down on one side of the U

  18. Ah yes, I think that'll work on one side at least.

    Surely the primary questions are:

What are you trying to hold with these nuts...as in what sort of forces might the need to contain.

What material(s) are being used...as in is it wood, steel etc?
