When interest rates go up and gold is seen as a good investment option those high end classics will drop In price ,every day classics should be ok.
As an owner of a 73 westie conti with the mustard cloth interior in right hand drive that's kinda why I brought it but you are ever mindful of ripping the seats or muddy dog paws.
If I wanted to do my own thing it would be a left hooker from Cali and rip the guts out of it.
When Or if I pass the bus on in 3 years and don't make a loss then fine I'm happy for all the fun I've had it's my hobbie not an investment I'm just looking after a bit of history for a while

  4. I won't tell you how much I paid for my 72 RHD original westy but suffice to say it's now worth 20x what I paid . I keep all my spare material and cushions and genuine curtains etc .....if only I bought those 3 sambas for 5k way back when

  5. That's where you are wrong - I'm going to sell ours next year and retire off the profit, which, incidentally, is free from Capital Gains Tax.

  9. I know some folks out there don't like people doing things to their buses, but as soon as one thing has been removed changed etc then it is no longer 'fully original'. My view is it is my bus and don't care what others think of my changes. When I bought it it wasn't an original colour, the carbs weren't original. I think if I came to sell there are plenty of people out there who would still be interested in it, let's face it the boys knocking these out for big bucks don't go for originality.

Its not a fast Jap engine ... hopefully a more reliable one to allow me to spend more time enjoying the bus with my family than stuck in the garage trying to get it running properly.

I wanted one firstly for the enjoyment, then knowing it would probably hold the value I paid for it, then for the love of tinkering with it....
We've made some great memories and there's more to come.
At the end of the day it's an old vw bus...but we love em!

I wanted one to re live old days of carefree motoring around Cornwall and Italy back in the 80's and got my just deserts!

Careful what you wish for became my motto soon after!:oops:

  14. Swap for V12 2+2 E type, highish mileage?

  15. Maybe your right and I don't really care . If you look at every other classic mark then usable original is the way to go and where the money's at ..would a bog standard Westy sell for more than a Westy with a new interior and jap engine ? I don't know ... personally I think all the scoobie boys are short sited as when they bann fossil fuel cars it's gonna be which batteries are you using ....

  16. I'd recommend living for the moment rather than worry about something that will happen in the future ... All those with original buses will then have to face up to change ... whereas us scoobie boys have already embraced it

There is a argument for both sides. I can see the reliable scooby powered bays dealing with modern traffic easier if that is what your driving experience is, but the charm of bays, splittys and beetles for me as always been the aircooled. It's what made them that extra bit special and easier to look after back in the day. Things move on I suppose and if a scooby keeps a owner happy and another bus alive then that's a good thing Shirley?

I called you Shirley as I know it's your real name!

  18. Steve .....but generally get called worse .... absolutely each to their own ....a second hand 10 year old fossil fuel burning engine isn't what I call living for the moment as they are no more or less reliable than aircooled but I do get it I really do especially when done a bit different to the norm ....10k will buy you a 400horse electric motor and 1/2 ton of Lithium batteries ..now that would be a cool 0-60 time .... as said I'm not hung up on it but I'm on team malc

  19. Air cooled and original for me for both, done Spain and Portugal in an air cooled, if I wanted better comfort and 100% reliability I'd get another vehicle.
