Push rod tube seals

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Owner of Tilly 1962 Bay, Jun 17, 2020.

  1. Hi,
What would you expect to pay for an engine to be removed and push rod tube seals to be replaced on a 1600 T2?
    Thanks

I'm not one of the mechanical experts on here but I don't quite understand the question!o_O

  3. You dont need the engine out to change the seals?

    Oily hands?
    What do you mean, exactly...?

  5. You know you don't need to remove the enginw to change the pushrod seals/tubes?

  6. You do on a type 1, unless you use leaky spring-loaded things. Engine out, heads off.

  9. Sorry - edited the question. How much would you expect to pay?

  10. Yes it is a type one. I’ve been told the engine needs to come out.

  11. Thanks.

  12. It does, unfortunately.

Would you be taking it to someone who knows about aircoolers? I'd avoid your local garage.

    DIY?

  14. Taking it to a local specialist.

Whereabouts are you? Somebody here might be able to recommend a garage. Not all specialists actually are!

  16. We’ve been highly recommended a garage and are awaiting a quote. We just wondered what to expect. Thank you though.

  17. New clutch while your at it heads off so almost a top end rebuild. And the rubbers that connect the manifold . If the engines never been out it's going to be an oily mess. As above £500 is a bargin when you have been trying undo a manky bit of engine tin all weekend. Unless your handy and have the tools

  18. Oh and I would highly recommend getting the fuel filler pipe replaced if it's never been done cheap insurance

This is the kind of job that can spiral out of sight "while the engine is out". Flywheel seal? New clutch? Missing tin? Fuel lines, breathers and filler hose? New engine seal, where do you stop?

Or worse, you go and pick it up to be told that the above "could do with attention but they didn't have time" and the engine would need to come out again...££££'s

A few trips to the garage like this, where £20 in parts cost £600 in labour and you see the sense of tooling up and getting stuck in yourself.
