  1. Well, its time for me to go back to work, which is awesome but frightning at same time, sooooooooooo i have been on the new and job center, which i kinda dont like, makes me feel like a down and outer if you know what i mean, horrible place, but anyway back to my RANT in hand, its been a long time since i last worked so qualifications are shot, anyway i need a CV and have found all the jobs i have looked at, say need to upload a cv, so i popped in google FREE online CV maker, filled in what i could and went to complete and its saying £19,99 or £9,99, FREE it says hahahahah, why say free, and you spend hrs racking your brain, using BIG words, and making my small abount of exsperiance look awesome, to find its not free loooooooooooooool, :-

Think i am tired, think i need to start again tomorrow fresh eye's and almost fresh brain. :p ::)

  2. mrs lowie had that happen to her she spent all afternoon at work doing her cv online to find out it was nt free after all

you can just do your own in word, there is no point going mad, most places don't read them all anyway, if i get them at work i much prefer the short and sweet 2 page maximum ones, i'm not interested what you did 20 years ago or if you got your bronze lifesaver in swimming in pyjamas.....really be precise but don't put too much, most places judge you on personallity than a load of flannel they can't prove anyway.

  4. Hahahahah my jaw hit the floor,

  9. Apparently there are decent CV templates on Job Centre Plus and Direct Gov websites. Free of charge. Promise.

  10. I'll read through it if you want. I've read through loads of cv's as part of my job so might be able to help? A few things I've learnt and used in my own CV are:

If you have any weird hobbies, don't mention them. It might make you look weird too.

Don't make it too long, I usually take more time to read the first and last job before reading through it all. I once had one that was about 10 pages long.

Try and keep the format simple with headings. The 10 page CV I mentioned above was also in about 8 different fonts and sizes.

If you send your CV to an agency and they send it to companies, make sure you see what they send first. I've seen loads with spelling mistakes and badly formatted.

Try and adapt the CV to the job you're applying to if you can.

  11. Lou is right - keep it short, to the point and job specific. I do think it is worth mentioning your hobbies and interests (yes as long as they're not weird) - I've been job hunting recently and it's amazing how many people ask me about VWs in interviews!

  12. Good luck with the cv uploading/job hunting Dinks ;) I think the last time i did one it was in word, and ran to a whole page with lots of double spacing :)

  14. Thankyou everybody awesome advice there, i am going to get a cupa tea tomorrow and sit till i sort it out,

  15. What I look for in a job application is someone who has answered the requirements of the person speci and addressed the job description. ie what can you do - what have you done. A CV is supplementory to this if we are taking about a specific job your going but could make the difference between you and the other shmo's.

The first sift is to see if you have the qualifications, the experience. If you havent been working its good to tell people what you have been doing as no-one wants to employ anyone that has spent the last year watching Jeremy Kyle. Dont be afraid to big yourself up a bit and if you can do something then tell them you can. dont personalise too much - ie no-one wants to know what you like for lunch or anything else too personal and you can if you arent careful convey an image as people who do actually read these things try to build up a picture of the applicant.

Avoid provoking peoples prejudices as although the person/s shortlisting should be profesional. If you tell them your a gay disabled single parent from a minority ethnic community then if that provokes their prejudices they will look for a weakness elsewhere a little harder to weed you out.

Sounds like im being negative but i look for competent confident people who are fresh in outlook, enthusiastic, personable and who have done at least a little bit of homework on the employer and believe it or not actually know what the job entails. I detest questions back relating to information they were given prior to the interview that they didnt read.

Wont go on anymore. Good luck and if you need owt you think I can help with then let me know (I only have one vacancy at the moment and thats for a heat and vent engineer)

I employed a few CAD draughtsmen over the years. None had done it before. I only had one interview question. "do you play a musical instrument?" I figured if someone has the patience and application to master, say the piano or guitar (not the drums), they can learn to be a CAD draughtsman pretty quick. Worked a treat every time. Also I was deliberately looking for people who'd screwed up at school and then matured too late so missed the boat. Qualifications have never impressed me.
