book says this...... i'd just do a couple pumps and test though, pipes get old and leak, i converted to electric as mine used to pour out behind the steering wheel
whs - first time I pumped mine up I only put about 20-25 psi in it and water came out of the steering column. went to halfords and bought a cheap pump and connected it up to a spare switch on the dash that one of the POs kindly left
Or cut the last 1/2" off the pipes where they join the column valve sorts it 9 times out of 10 in less time and for no cost... and no irritating whirring noises.

The VW hose is designed to take 42psi, unlike other hose which isn't. The hose is pressurised all the way from the bottle to the valve behind the steering column.
