I had a firm fit a central heating system in my house 20 months ago, now they’re ringing me constantly about insurance for the system and offering full cover for £16 a month, but first I have to have my boiler serviced by them at some cost to me! They say it’s equivalent to the British Gas second top policy which is £25 a month. My question is, has anyone any experience with this type of insurance and is it worth it?
I took out a British gas contract years ago, probably paid over the odds for it, but they do come out and fix it, I had no end of problems getting the local independent plumbers out to fix stuff. round here the good ones are always flat out... We had a new boiler fitted 2 years ago and kept the BG contract running at a reduced rate as with any insurance/breakdown policy it depends on how much you use it, before the new boiler it paid for itself on 1 breakdown, BG contract usually includes an annual service (i'll tell you later how this goes as they are booked in today for the annual service)
Our boiler has been in for about 10 years now. I don't think I've spent nearly as much on servicing and repairs as those premiums would cost. It's had to have a bit of attention - new expansion tank and valve amongst others. I'm still quids in though I reckon, being a "renegade" with no extended warranty
My boiler fell of the back of a lorry (if you get my meaning ) and I fitted it 12 years ago never done a thing to it other than top it up with water no and again.
We had the British Gas contract a few years back, before we moved house. I forget what we paid / month but the service we got was excellent, always prompt when the boiler broke down, likewise with booked services. The Engineer's always made sure they tidied up after themselves and was courteous too. I don't know how they are now (3 1/2 years) as we've moved house & didn't renew with them.
Been there done that ( fitted my own not a dodgy one) but as I get older I don’t want the hassle of pulling boilers apart.
If they were phoning constantly, and I felt I would get the benefit of a service contract (tbh, the chap who put in our boiler said they are not worth it, and seeing as he’s essentially doing himself out of a regular payment from us I’m inclined to believe him) , then on principle I would go elsewhere and let them know that they lost my business through being too pushy.
£16 a month = £192 a year and then servicing by them on top? Are the annual rates fixed after you join or are they able to increase say annually with regard to RPI or similar? We had a new boiler put in about 7 years ago if it last ten years without any repair then we would be better off without a service contract. You also need to consider who is underwriting the scheme.
What boiler is it how long was the warranty most have at least 5 years now so no need to pay as it covered by the manufacturer just get it serviced each year cost about £50/60 pound job done.
I think most of the insurances you get for appliances etc are a waste of money, just put the money in a separate account and use it to pay for repairs.
Spot on. I’m no slouch when it comes to my finances, it isn’t the money part that bothers me too much its finding out what people’s experiences with this type of insurance is. Regarding the payment I’d just ask for an annual amount and compare next year like I do with my car and landlords insurance for my other properties.
Modern boilers are a bit finnicky aren't they? We had a really old one, I paid someone to service it once - all he did was clean the burner so I did it myself afterwards but only if it needed it - which was once. That was 20 years of zero cost boilering. 20 x £192 = £3,800 odd. I did alright there it seems.
Never ever ever. Just no no no no and another no for good measure. That’s like saying I was kind of guessing sticking my face in this meat grinder would be a better option. if by a better option you are comparing it to say being half mauled to death by a pack of hungry wolves then I guess you could say there’s a marginal advantage to going with BG. But In all other measures that any sane human being would consider. It’s a bad choice.
You gotta remember. I contracted for them for 18months. I’ve seen that business from the inside. I’ve seen all their sharp business practices and the quality of most of their work. stick the money in a bank account then get a local guy with experience to do it properly. we used to call BG jobs Drive By Services. Cos you’d open up the laptop and look at what was done apparently last year by their engineers and it would have absolutely no connection to what you were actually looking at. So we reckon they just drive by the house, saw what flue was sticking out and then just made the rest up.
