It was time for an above service on Marge & I thought some of you may be interested in a bit of a tip on removing & replacing plugs. My "ar@e" squirms every time I remove or replace a plug in those ally heads.

I'm sure all the "old" hands do this but some of you newbies may find it interesting.
It applies to both T1 & T4 engines.

Essentially, use a bit of old hose pipe to undo old or screw in new plugs.
Crack the old plugs, push on the hose, & unscrew.
Gap your new plugs, a bit of copper slip on the threads, & hand tighten in with the hose (hand tight means no stripped ally threads). Remove pipe & tighten with usual spanner!

Note, any lubricating of the threads with graphite or copper grease will affect the torque settings. Don't overdo the spanner swinging or you will strip the threads.
Re-check your work after a few miles.....

Don't forget when doing points to put bit of grease on the dizzy centre cams to alleviate wear.

  2. Nice post and advice. You should move this over into the 'How to' section so it doesn't get buried

Thanks @Joker , how do I move the thread into the "how to"?

  4. Think you either re-write it in how to or one of the great all seeing administrators has to do it for you!

  5. You will remove the thread from the head, if you dont use Graphite grease on the plug threads;) I know this is not what you meant!!

  6. Don't forget a couple of drops of oil on the felt pad inside the dissy shaft!
