Play in top of column

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Vancam70, Sep 9, 2017.

  1. t203800.gif I have a fair bit of play in the top of my steering column , side to side , looking at this picture I haven't got any 37s are they just washers or a spring ? When I push 36 down the play goes but it works its way up again so I'm guessing I need to sandwich something between 36 and the steering wheel .
    Thanks

37 is a spring. It holds the expletive deleted tiny bearing together.
On mine I had the spring but the top bearing shell was in 4 pieces.
There is a kit advertised by the likes of JK that replaces the bearing with a needle roller bearing and a sleeve. I couldnt find one available so I used a 22x28mm needle roller bearing and a 28x33mm bushing and some bodgery. The bushing was PTFE lined so the bearing slipped down inside so I cut some slots in it and knocked the tabs I had made inwards to stop the bearing vanishing. Then the horn didnt work so I had to jam in a bit of copper sheet to make contact between the bearing and the steering column. Covered it in grease and stuck a lip seal on top to stop it filling up with dirt.

  4. I take it that 10 is the bearing because 36 pushes in between it and the shaft 7 ? And the spring keeps it pushed down ?

  5. Found a spring in dads " bag of springs " seems to be doing the job .
    Cheers
