Pipe from Oil filler neck not connected one end and catching on alternator belt

  1. All,

    Appreciate your help please.

Fitted a reconned engine from VW Engine Company.

Had alternator replaced by local company, all works well other than the pipe from the oil filler neck is attached to the oil filler neck but the other end is not connected to anything.

The local company have wedged the end of that pipe inside the 'O" shape on the top of the dipstick.

The end of the pipe then drips oil occasionally and catches on the alternator belt, making a knocking noise and spraying the occasional drips of oil around the engine bay.

Last week, the unconnected oil pipe dripped oil through the hole in the tinware onto the exhaust, causing smoke and a near heart attack for me, as i thought the engine was on fire !

So, where should the other end of the oil filler neck pipe attach or go please ?

    Many thanks

  2. Do you have an oil bath air filter?

The pipe from the oil filler neck should be connected to a breather box or air filter. If you have twin carbs then a breather box and fed to both sides.

Under no circumstance block it off. You'll end up with a lot of oil over your driveway when crankcase pressure builds and blows your pushrod seals.

  6. thanks

so, there should be a breather box on the reconned engine then ?

any idea what it looks like

    there are twin carbs fitted

    cheers

Just pipe it into the top of either carb filter. The suction on the breather creates -ve crank case pressure and helps keep the oil in. The best fillers are the originals with the additional solid pipe back down through the tin where your chappy has poked the breather tube.

  8. heres a pic of my engine you can just see breather box ontop of oil filler neck with hose going to it.

if you cant get old of one of these. im certain you would be able to, a neck extension might be the other option as im sure it has a pipe inlet for the breather..

Here's a pic showing the original filler. These are the best. The flex pipe goes to the air filter when it's fitted, but with twin carbs it's just the same, but you need a longer pipe and a bolt on fitting for your air filter. You can get a 90deg one if there isn't much room.

    Hears mine
Twin carbs with a after-market breather box (silver box on fan cover) with oil breather and fuel breather pipes, then piped to each carb to keep mixture the same in both carbs
