I've just run my T2 1600 engine for about 10 mins to warm up as it stalls if I take my foot off the accelerator - problem 1. Whilst trying to figure out what the problem might be, I noticed petrol leaking sporadically from the right hand pump cover WEBER ICT 34 carb.... uneducated guess, but I'm assuming this isn't right... problem 2.. Any help appreciated.. Thanks in advance...
That would be a split accelerator pump diaphragm. Stalling when cold... Try a bigger idle jet for less pumping. You'll still need to warm the heads up a but a bit of throttle will be all you need. If this is a new symptom, look for an air leak carb/manifold plus anything connected to it/head.
Thanks for the reply... do I need to change the pump diaphragm?? What size middle jet would you say?? Plus... when you say look for an air leak..... can you help with how I might do that please... plus, until I sort the stalling I can't run the engine so any advice on that would be great.. Thanks
well - I suppose so.. the van has been parked over winter and started ok over the winter but this week when I started her up, stalling....
You need to provide a fuller picture or we'll have you trying things all weekend when it could just be stale fuel...for example.
No problem. Never had a problem before. The engine was fitted with new cylinder heads last year used a little about 500miles and then parked for winter. The carbs were filthy last year and were cleaned out and 'set' by a local garage - not specific vw and so just a garage but said the carbs need stripping etc. Thats on my list over the next week or so. But when I started 2 weeks ago - started ok, ran ok although not been on the road yet - but engine just dies unless I have foot on accelerator. Ran for about 15 mins today but no change. Idling was fine before that. Pertonix electronic ignition, standard dizzy/fuel pump. Carbs not looked at for some time. Van respray last year so A LOT OF CRAP in the engine bay.... let me know if there's anything else ? Thanks
I would try freshening the petrol, dump a gallon or two on top of what you have. A hot engine copes better with fuel that's lost it's fizz. After that I would do as you intended anyway and give the carbs a going over - a job which has brought itself forward with the leaking accelerator pump. While you have the carbs apart, note down the jet sizes and emulsion tube type so you know for any running problems later.
It could also be that once it starts, it is pouring petrol into the manifold from an overflowing float chamber. The needle valves on Webers wear out and start leaking excess fuel into the engine and then past pistons into the oil. I would check to make sure the oil is not contaminated with petrol. If you floor it it sucks enough petrol to overcome the leak but pootling along it goes burbly , rich and dies. With dual carbs it is only dying on one side if it has a needle valve problem .
Also look at float chamber fuel metering needle valve.. this is off a Weber that leaked: The tip should be a simple cone without the wear groove half way down.. About every 15000 miles..
