Before you take it out give it a tap with a hammer and then try it

  3. Starter out (easy). Starter to pieces (also easy), clean 30 year's worth of crap from solenoid mech... :)

  4. Just buy a new one

  5. A snotty said pull it all apart and clean it up and it should work fine again

  6. i prefer to , if poss. repair , and if a part goes awol i like to know why it failed for referance , anyhow chaps , droped starter and nowt looked untoward EXCEPT !, the bentley manual ,/j.muir book say the length of the op. rod out of solonoid should be from solonoid end- to slot >19mm , > mine? 30mm ! so , books say "loosten locknut /adjustment bolt and reset/adjust to proper(19mm) op. length, now mine is a Bosch starter as book instructs,, only thing is , there is no adj. nut that i can see/find on solinoid ? and looking at pics in books , same part , cant see anything even resembling an adjuster/locknut on them either ? took end screws from solinoid but it does not seem to want to come apart , now struggling ! any you guys got a working opinion please ? and ta>could a diff. solinoid be fitted to my starter perhaps?

  7. ha, egg all over my face! , reckon after THINKING about it , and looking at it(solinoid , AND thinking some more , i"ve been measuring the supposed 19mm distance whilst the shaft op . mec . is in the "out, disengaged " position !! or its a heck of a coincidence that when its in engaged position the measurement is correct !? still not fixed anything thou, still wondering why a)solinoid was staying engaged b)what ,is holding solinoid together once 2 end bolts are removed ?(buses !!!)
