I believe Mr Dox's focus is on the ever increasing price of panels and doors ATM. Quite right too, a few years ago mine were £80 each, fully built up with no rust. Same door is £500+ now...stripped. The price is only going to continue rising.
But you can drive and use a van with rusty door bottoms. You would struggle to do this without an engine unless youre Fred Flinstone. I know what I would rather spend £500 on.
Have to say, when we got engine back from this same builder, it was a great engine. Bog standard 1600, but drove lovely.
Next year doors will be even more expensive and worse condition. Meanwhile our Chinese chums AApistons are knocking out really nice heads, barrels and pistons at steady reasonable prices.
yep I got two perfect Australian rust free doors complete for £90 each and scrapped my what would now be £400 old doors ..
I threw away usable doors 10 years ago, and bought the new German style (not Brazilian) ones that were available at the time. £295 each ... My £2600 engine has AA pistons, EMPI heads and an Autolinea aluminium case. All new and the combination runs 10 degrees C cooler with the same carburation and exhaust than with genuine VW heads and Mahle forged pistons on an AS21 case.. I think 10 years ago the same money would have got a similar engine. The all new engines have hardly increased in price while the doors are unobtanium.
