I've had a quick search on this subject and can't find anything - so apologies if there are other posts.

I'm about to paint my roof with a roller and brush and I found this video on you tube about something called Roll and Tip - seems to be the way to get a killer finish when manually applying gloss finishes.

Rolling and Tipping - First Coat

I'm using something called Pre Kote and Toplac on my Glassfibre pop top - with the correct thinning this seems to be the best way of applying it without spraying.

Anyone got their lessons learnt to share (I'll post mine when I get round to the painting part).

  2. Have a look on landrover forums they all roller thier rides:)

Harris gloss roller 4" are good for the purpose

  3. Looks good to me moons x ^-^

  4. Hi moons I think there are a few threads about rollering on here somewhere, I know that baybug has rollered his van. Good luck and keep us posted

  5. There was sum good threads..sure ..some of them were lost when the server went down..

  6. As above I've rolled my van and brushed in places I'm using rustoluem and white spirit or acetone ,the finish is not bad just needs loads of thin layers and some flatting in between coats , have a look at my resto thread and you will see some bits done .
It's easy to cover bits that you want to keep the surface rust off as its easy to just brush or roller some on .
I've sprayed the inside with it and some of the front panel just make sure your prep is good or it will come of in time :)

  7. its the old school way to do it owen nw

  8. Buy good quality rollers and brushes and practice on an old panel to get the hang of it

I tried rollering some semi gloss farm oxide once and the foam roller disolved and left lumps in the paint

  9. iv rolled mine and found this vid helpfull. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/_qPJTTRWttQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
i basically did what this guy did and it worked really well!
apart from i used satin paint not thinking that when you rub the final coat it would not be satin anymore haha so i used 1500 on final coat as little as possible so now its kinda satin ;D
i didnt use a hairdryer as not really needed i found.
the trick is finding the right roller (i went through many different brands) and found the best were foam gloss rollers from homebase the brand was harris i think. they need to be firm as the soft cheap ones leave a lot of bubbles.
the amount of paint on the roller is critical as well. you want just enough on to cover. too much and its bubbly too little and you get lines where your pushing too hard to get coverage. roll back and forth but when happy with coverage roll one way to finish.
if i hadnt used satin i would say after final rub down you would not even know that it had been rollerd! but i kinda like the way its turned out as it now dosnt look shiney and new but clean and like the paint is worn as its satin with a little shine in places (where i got carried away) ::)

  13. YEAH , wot was funny was it was in a layby on A4 just west of Heathrow airport , u can get 4 class one artics in them easily , i was at the foremost point of layby, painting away , happy as the proverbial sandboy , and all the rest of layby was empty, but , cars would pull in stop behind me, look at what i was doing , then reverse and bog off !??? i mean ,NOT reverse back say 20ft(6mtr) , but totally gone ! its true i was fair splashing it on (mine wheels is a RAT") but i opinion those car driver dudes seriously overreacted ! (apologies to anyone who arrived home and found blue paint on their metalwork ...assume u drove on past ?) it can be forwarded .........
