Over painting hammerite

  1. Any painters out there or people that know about paints .
Right I have some big garage doors approx 8ft×9ft x2 there metal framed with thick ( marine ply ? ) previous owners of the house seemed to have painted them in blue hammerite ( found an old tin of it ) now I want to repaint them possibly a different colour in a decent outdoor paint but don't particularly want to use hammerite again mostly due to probably needs tons of the stuff . Can you paint over it or is it going to be a case of stripping it all off? Which is going to be a right Pita and take forever .
    Ideas would be grateful
Need to wait for weather to warm up a bit 1st aswell

  2. I've never had much luck painting over Hammerite. There's something in it that seems to react with other paint. You could try power-sanding it back then a coat of primer?

If it old and fully cured you should be able to
I would paint a bit and see what happens

  4. Like matty said, try a patch first but Hammerite is quite oily in it's finish (for a reason) so for a good job, afraid it's time to strip off (ohh err)

  5. Thought as much . I was told years ago that it had a silicone base in ? Dunno how true that's probably why nothing will stick to .
Its It's been on for god knows how many years the old tin I found was very rusty on the outside. I may try a bit once flatted a bit see what happens . But it looks like I'm gonna have to strip and get the right arm too work . Oh er
Next question what do I use to get it off ? I have a heat gun dunno if that will be effective at heating up and then scraping?

  6. i'd doubt that a heat gun will get it off. If it's solid I'd sand it flat and prime it.

  7. Think I will buy a sander as I'll be f##ked if I'm gonna rub that lot down by hand lol

    Thanks for the replys folks

  8. Just paint over it with Smoothrite..........

  9. ^this, I think. I originally painted my fuel tank bulkhead with Hammerite, and everything reacted with it. In the end, I just resprayed it with Smoothrite.

Might it be easier to buy a new set of doors?!
