I decided it was time to give pinkys roof a clean - or at least half of it so far. I used jiff, cilit bang and a sponge and wire brush - after 40 mins it looks like this I'll finish the rest at the weekend subject to clear sky's
Looking good Dan, the next phase will be to sterlise everything with Miltons fluid... And if you don't know about Miltons,, you soon will )
Couldnt you pressure wash it ? not sure wire brush good idea on fibreglass :- would have thought it would scratch gelcoat??Polish is good to stop it getting grimey.
I used scotchbrite and bleach on mine. Then waxed it. Looked great for 2 weeks, but starting to look grubby again. Hopefully because of the wax it will clean up a lot easier. When I can be bothered.
It gets grimey coz the gel coat is scratched by road grime seagul poop etc and sun damage, thats why good to get good coat of polish on and then clean regularly, if osmosis sets into fibreglass it will fall apart eventually. Polish it try not to scratch it.Tis true it does it to boats too.
Some of them never really had a shiney gel-coat Barney. You could brush/roller paint that with boat paint for £25, then it would be easy to clean, if it ever needed it. Easy stuff to use.
i dont want to get my roof pristine shiny white - i just wanted it to look less dirty ... it's the roof rack that needs most of the work .. its rusted to .. well rust
hey barney - i didn't mean that as a dig to you - or anyone ... but a shiny roof would look so out of place on pinky .... i think i'll get it all cleaned and get some polish on it
Did a bit more this eve - so the main bit is done - going to tackle the roof rack on sat - plan to take the whole thing off - just hope it goes back on
Avoid the use of bleach on GRP especially if there isn't a protective gel coat, it attacks the fibre strands accelerating degradation. A brushed on coat of a synthetic enamel with seal the surface provided any pock marks caused by osmosis are dried out and filled first.
