Hi all. Does anyone have a record player, they want to sell, Neil my eldest had a new record player for Christmas and it's crud so that is going back, would prefer a 70's og one but any era considered. must be fully working. We need a good working one so are prepared to pay. an hi fi unit or music centre with fully working deck is fine too.

    Can anyone help here?

    Cheers Malc

  2. I would check eBay, although a quick glance reveals that the vinyl revival has boosted prices again. Mine's not for sale.

What make of turn table did Neil get at Christmas?
There are some good ones out there but also a lot of crap at the cheaper end of the market

Have a look at the Denon range, I've got one which is excellent & reasonably priced.
    I normally use a Thorens TD309

Probably not much use but I often buy hi-fi gear from these guys in Sydney http://www.classic-hifi.net/
    Some great retro stuff there.

What a nice article, thanks for the link. My stylus is knackered and I can't get another cartridge to fit my 70's B&O deck but I've had a similar "old school hi-fi" moment with my eldest who now has boxes and boxes of vinyl. Also the amps and speakers. I have a 28W per channel 70's Hitachi amp/reciever and 60's 40W 4 ohm speakers that make his 1000w set up sound like a transistor radio. He still asks how many watts it is every few years as if he thinks one day I'll remember I forgot a zero or two on the end. :)

Just looked and a cartridge for mine is up for £400 on ebay, you just can't get them.

  13. sold hers for 25 quid , no one wanted it

  14. Look for something like a Rega Planar 3 - they will be £100+ but worth every single penny

@zed can you change the tone arm or the cartridge head?

It's a wierd thing with a pencil thin arm and cartridge. The kind of thing that would be all style and no substance nowadays, but was actually quite good kit in it's day. The spares will be over-priced due to the retro styling and I'd be better off getting a modern one though. In those days I'd happily spend a month or 2 wages on second hand hi-fi, but 35 years later it's proved to be a good investment. Apart from the deck. :D
