Oil on tailgate

  1. Any ideas why?

Finding that after a run the outside of the tailgate is spattered with engine oil. Not awash, but noticeable. The van's running fine though.

Not sure how oil travels up and forwards while the van's going forward, but if it's happened to a van before I'm sure one of you chaps will know why.

  2. You've got a leak which gets caught up in the air vortices behind the van.

If type 4 its likely the crank oil seal which is then leaking into the fan and literally blowing out the back

    Or push rod tubes.

Which ever don't ignore it as it takes a lot of oil to be blowing out the back. Mine used to reach the middle of the roof!!!

  4. I left the oil filler cap off and had the same once. Worth a quick check.

  5. Up side if you have a leaky engine is that the back of your bus won't rust

  6. I used to fly a Cessna 150. We had to put in a litre of oil almost every flight but it kept the underside of the fuselage nicely corrosion proofed.

And we complain how expensive it is to run a bus!

  7. Zed

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

Oil splattered up the back usually turns out to be the flywheel oil seal.

  8. Oh well, back to the shop it goes.

    Thanks all.

  9. Or the dipstick boot. I had the full range of oil leaks, they all drip down, get caught in the airflow underneath and end up on the rear.
