  1. Hi
Got a problem that I need advice for, here we go.
Got a t2 with type 4 engine got a oil leak that runs down oil filter and then drips on exhaust.I am thinking oil cooler , if it is how does it come off ? From under van or remove tin ware ?
Any other ideas of oil leak .
    Thanks

Check your oil pressure sender first…near distributor, perhaps under a rubber seal…you’ll see the wire.
Pray it’s that as oil cooler is a bigger job altogether.

  3. That's fine and no signs of oil there.

Dipstick rubber boot worth a look - easy fix and common problem

Silly suggestion, but have you checked you filter is tight enough or that the (edit) seal is present? I had a small leak down my filter and it just wasn't on tight enough. I'm sure I had done it up properly, but it was loose all the same!

  6. No signs of oil leak in the engine bay all underneath, oil filter always has a drip hanging from it and all underneath is wet.

  8. How does the oil cooler come off if it is that ?

  9. Have you just fitted a new filter at all? The rubber seal can sometimes not seat in the groove correctly causing a leak. I always remove the new seal before fitting the filter and coat it in a thin covering of oil which should stop it distorting as you tighten the filter up.

    With work!!!

A lot of tin and cooling shroud. Time consuming and not the easiest job in situ.

If you follow the dipstick down there is a rubber boot as it goes into the block. You can only really see it from underneath. They commonly fail and oil is seen on the bottom the engine towards the front. Worth a look

I had the same and it was the brand spanking new oil cooler hadn't been made properly. Bit of a pain to change to be honest.

  14. Can I second oil filter - I was chasing a leak down for ages, thought it was oil cooler seals.... turns out hand tightening the filter wasnt enough and a tweak with the removal tool to tighten sorted it

  15. Thanks would a over tightened oil filter give me any problems?

  16. Yes.... if you really go for it, but not in the same way as an over-tightened strainer would. Generally, it'll be a lot harder to remove and may involve much destruction of the filter - I guess it's possible to strip threads etc, so would suggest a "good" tighten on the wrench, drive and see if this has sorted the leak.

If it is the oil filter, try and use Bosch ones, they have a protruding “nut” on the bottom …. helps with fitting/removing and the shape of the
“nut” helps to prevent over tightening…the spanner slips off .

Things that have happened - leaving the O ring on from a previous filter (not me) , and scratches on the filter head (thankyou EMPI) ...

On the instructions for the filters I use it states, and repeated on the graphics on the side .. "lubricate seal with oil, hand tighten until it touches then tighten by hand 3/4 of a turn."

This is because you can over-crush the seal or start to strip the pressed mild steel thread on the filter if you use tools (which may result in your engine leaving all its oil all over the drive way on a cold start .. or somewhere less convenient and more expensive )

Round the filter housing every 90 degrees are convenient white marks .. between the part numbers..
