Relatively low stress there, 8.8 will do. If you want the pukka bolt it’s part number N 0103533, M8X42. There should be a M8X42 stud and nut below the cap - I guess you’ve discovered that.

:)...I was finding it difficult to ID the bolt from the parts diagram. Cheers.

  3. That’s a standard strength bolt I would say. The Torque setting eludes me at the moment but it’s not a lot & won’t snap an m8 bolt.

Oil gallery plugs. I had the plugs removed and new threads put into the case by Formhalls ready for my new insert plugs. Before fitting the new inserts once cleaning is finished, do they go in with any Permatex sealant or locktight red? Thanks

  6. I used blue loctite .. said sealer as well on the box so went with that.. not seen them weep any yet but can't see most of them anymore...

  7. Use the blue medium Loctite. Anything else, you'll never get them out again without wrecking the case.

  8. That's going to be a boggo 8.8.

I use anodised aluminium plugs and Curil K2 sealant. :)

Hopefully somebody will be able to help. I can't find a stud that came out of my engine in any of the normal shops I've looked at so I think it may not be the original size. I need it as the stud thread was damaged during the disassembly. The photo of the engine is where it came from and the size is M8 (7.8mm diameter across shank) and 64mm long end to end with each thread length of 16mm.

So is this the right size for that location?

    Thanks

The parts book has M8X63 (part number N 0145982). I probably have one in a crankcase but getting it to you would cost more than the stud and a decent fastener shop should be able to supply it.

My shopping list is growing and I'm now looking at flywheels and clutches.

I have a type 4, 2ltr engine with a 6 rib gearbox that has come with a 210mm clutch and flywheel. As far as I can tell I should have a 228mm set up. So can I check:
    A) Am I correct about sizing?
    B) Should I stay with what I have, impact on life expectancy and impact on my left leg?
    C) Should I change, if I can find a correctly sized flywheel?
    D) If I do change, what else does it affect...bell housings come to mind.

As usual thanks in advance and sorry if this is a dumb question.

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

Bell housing is the only thing. The bell housing on the 6 rib should be correct but somebody might have changed it.

    A) 2.0l ‘should’ have a 228mm clutch.
    B) It will work with a 210mm but it will be more likely to slip.
    C) I would, but you don’t have to.
    D) The 6-rib bell housing ‘should’ be suitable for a 228mm clutch.

Judging by the condition of the engine you probably have a good idea of what bit is wrong.:)

    Cheers both.

To check if the bell housing is fit for purpose is it just a straight measurement? Picture attached.

I've looked about for a 228mm flywheel, no luck yet in the UK. I did not experience any clutch slip so I may just keep as it is if it gets too costly for the moment.

  18. if you are wanting to go with a 228mm flywheel you can use a wasserboxer flywheel, thats what I have fitted to my type 4 and its abit lighter aswell

Was looking at that earlier, thanks. As well as checking my bell housing, I'm going to check my starter tomorrow just to make sure I've got the right type after reading this thread, but from a poor photo I have of my starter I think I may have the right type.
