Oil change/ Flush

  1. Hello everyone,

I'm planning on doing an oil change in the next couple of weeks for the first time on my camper. In the past I've always used an engine flush added to the old warm oil before removing but this was for modern spin on filter engines.

I've seen no mention of this though for vw aircooled engines? Is this a no no or safe to do?

    I have a 1589 twin port.

  2. Best not to flush. All the muck in your oil cooler will exit via your main bearings.

  3. How do you flush the oil system out then? With fresh oil?

  4. That's all I did , drain the old oil and put fresh in untill it runs clear out of the sump.

  5. Would it be correct to assume that flushing is unnecessary anyway because the oil change interval is short, couple that with modern oils and additives ?

  6. I see. Looking at the state of my oil at the moment its black as the ace of spades. Will I need to by more than 4 litres to flush and replace the whole system?

  7. Its old school thick mineral oil that hasn't been changed in a while. I doubt there are any cleaning agents in there!

  8. Think you need 2.5l from empty to fill a bay.

I bought a 6l pack and emptied the original oil, then ran 2l through till it all looked nice and clear before finally changing the strainer, gaskets and filter etc and refilling with new again.

It's probably over kill but I thought for a few quid it wouldn't hurt and as I don't know when it was last changed I felt better for doing it :)

I would just drain the old and refill air cooled engines are very robust with big tolerances
As they are oil cooled they are hard on the oil thats why it looks so bad and you have to change so often.
