Oil breather

  1. When i got my van the EMPI oil breather was connected up really badily so i removed the whole thing from the van and reconnected the pipe back up to the air filter, upon removing the breather i have noticed a lot of leakage from my rocker covers so im going to reconnect it back up. Can i just clarify this is right.
Where is the best place to place the oil breather?
Also Is it one pipe from the crancase breather to the breather box then a pipe to either rocker cover does it stll need to go back into the air filter or does this just by pass the air filter??

    Thankyou any help gratefully recieved.

  2. What engine type do you have? On my type 4 the breather pipe goes to the air filter and thats it. Nothing to the rocker covers. If you post a picture the experts will be on later and will put you right.

  3. rockers don`t need venting

  4. Unless listening to pop music ,then rockers get really humpy

zed, Lofty and Poptop2 like this.
  5. I have a 1600 upright the rocker covers are leaking quite a bit of oil onto the heater exchanges. I'm going to try new cork gaskets and new rocker covers before I fit the breather back on. I'm hoping that solves the problem it is leaking quite a bit but it's not showing on the dip stick from what I'm reading the rockers do leak a bit just a bit worried as the heater exchanges get quite hot!

  6. If you've got a bog standard 1600, you don't need a breather box and certainly not connections to the rocker covers. Blank them off and refit with new cork gaskets and decent bails: they'll stop leaking.

You've got a standard solex carb, yes?

  7. I have a k&n twin Snotty but I don't think it's high performance enough to use a breather do you?

  8. Single Solex carb, you'd be better off with the standard air box & associated gubbins to prevent manifold icing. Twins, you'd be fine with the breather tapped into one of the filters.

We're all familiar with the sheer brute power that a stock 1600 can produce, but a breather box is a bit OTT ;)

  9. Ha ha I know the power is unbelievable 0-50 in a week I will go with new gaskets and covers for now I think see how I get on thanks for your help mate

It may be worth using some Permatex between rocker cover and the gasket , mostly to make sure the gasket does not slip out of place as you put it in and cause a spectacular temperature related oil leak. (it seals fairly well when cold and buckles up when hot).
It is only there really to hold the gasket in place so you dont need to do the cylinder head side as well. Then those leaks should stop.
Also make sure the bail springs are hard to do up. If they slip on easily, replace them.
