oil bath airfilter

  1. looking at a couple of these oil baths for type2 but both are different and i do not know which one i need or how all the pipes are fitted/go.
    looked on samba no real help,looked in bentley manual and shows two little pics with no real clue which one i need.as for the haynes manual well nuff said i think.
    i have a stock 16tp 34pict 3 carb with thermostat fitted correctly and works spot on,stock exhaust with xchangers to boot.
    just need advice/pics on which filter i need and how it's plumbed in.

    help much appreciated.

    The oil bath that came with this carburettor has a thinnish tapered (down to about 20mm diameter circular) air inlet tube to the rear of the cleaner. A thicker plastic tube with corrugations to give it flexibility goes from the top of the cleaner to the top of the carburettor with a narrowing and a right angle bend just above the carburettor.

    A hose comes from the crank case oil breather into the inlet pipe of the air cleaner just after a weighted hinged flap which keeps lower pressure in the cleaner and sucks the crank case fumes back in to the inlet.

    Another pipe goes into the cleaner from the fuel tank breather system from a tee piece near the carburettor.

    A vacuum hose goes from the carburettor to one spigot on the top of the cleaner, the other spigot is connected down to a vacuum actuator thingy on the underside of the inlet pipe. A hose from the inlet pipe goes through the third hole in the tinware down to pick up warm air. from by the cylinder cooling fins on the right.
    This warm air is sucked in when the throttle is opened and the valve in the top of the cleaner is cold enough to let vacuum go down to the actuator.

    If this is all set up OK the engine sucks in warmish air and the inlet manifold is also heated from below. Then you can drive in the winter. Miss bits out and put on a bling chrome ir filter and the carb can all ice up and the engine will stop or lurch and surge.

    If it all works properly, the inlet manifold just nelow the carb. will be cool rather than freezing to touch after a run and the air cleaner will be slightly warm to the touch.

    Tremendous write up of what the standard air filter should do, I've been menaing to ask this question myself as my van has got a cheapo chrome bling 'performance pancake' air filter on top of the carb :-[

    Before I changed my engine for a big shiney one I had a crappy cheap chrome air filter, a crappy cheap chinese dizzy and a crappy cheap empi carb and a crappy cheap monza exaust ??? it ran fine, never missed a beat and got me all round the country for years :)
