And thats just poking it with a screwdriver. Atleast the bit around the front beam is still solid. Wire brushed the beam too and its solid aswell. Any idea what the box section bit (above the rust hole) is there for? Its not on the other chassis leg at all.
You van has been bodged by the same person that bodged the one I'm fixing with the disgraceful chassis repairs. Same box section, same side, one side only, bits welded to the front beam. I'll take a picture tomorrow, you'll be amazed!
Seems a bid odd though. My mates '73 has the exact same box section on that side only and its never been welded. Beam hasn't got anything welded to it though which is a blessing i suppose.
I think it was a feature on earlier vans. What year's your van? I've repaired a couple of vans and they've had that bit. A '71 certainly, i'm trying to remember if my '72 has got that bit.
Mine was made in november '72. I've no idea what its for. Nothing seems to run through it and nothing bolts to it either.
I'm assuming theres supposed to be metal here aswell, instead of a gaping rusty hole. Its the bit behind kickpanels.
Still absolutely no idea what the box section is for on the side of the chassis rail. I'm gonna chop it off to get to the rot behind it. Not sure whether to weld another section back in or not. It only goes from the beam to the crossmember amd doesn't seem to have a purpose. Theres not one on the other side. Looks like i'll need to remove the beam to weld in the end of the chassis as its quite tight and i'm not sure the welders torch will fit. Bought a big sheet of 2mm steel from the scrappy for a couple of quid though to remake it all.
Why is it you run out of everything at once? Ran out of welding wire after welding in just one panel. Red oxide primer is solid in the tin as the lid wasn't on properly, tin of underseal has dried up and chassis black is just a dribble left in the can. Already had to buy seam sealer.
