  1. On way to absolute VW to get carbs adjusted ready for road trip next weekend at 40mph and loss of power, lots of blue smoke and clattering sound. New engine last year not happy. Van now on recovery vehicle heading to same place. Guess they won't be adjusting the carbs just yet!

    Err thats bad.

Need to find out if it was overheating (probably not at 40mph) , lack of oil (more likely), reconditioned engine just breaking again with its new owner.

  3. Just topped oil up yesterday but, engine did seem hit when I stopped.

You didn’t leave the bit of rag you wiped the dipstick with in the engine bay did you?

Good that its under warranty, or at least they are looking at it now, bad that it happened with one of their engines. But you will never quite know what actually happened.
Hope its a problem from the parts they used rather than finding that you melted the piston through timing errors or mixture setting.

A cracked rocker shaft is a bit strange. Finding it rattling in the rocker cover with the nuts undone, I can believe, having done that.

It will be important to know if it was your engine's environment = something you have to fix, or something in the engine build = bad luck.

In the first case you risk a repeat failure for the same cause if you do nothing to fix the external problem, in the second its just another random thing.

A photo of the crack would be very informative
