You shouldn't need an international driving permit in EU countries if you have an EU style photocard driving licence, although you should carry the licence counterpart too (the paper bit that your points go onto if you're caught speeding). An IDP is useful if you only have the old style paper licence.
depends what countries you goto but in fairness i was on a 6mth tour but better be safe than sorry and as i said i got asked and i was only in belguim (1 of the countries that apparently doesn t need it )

Re: the breathalyser mentioned in a post above - have checked and whilst they are recommended from Jan 2012, they are not compulsory until November 2012 and police will be unable to issue fines before then.
