No matter what I do it leaks oil, the other side is fine. What is the best thing to try and seal it with, the raw gasket, smear of grease or not, some kind of sealer or not. the surfaces are clean, clip needs to prised on, cant do it by hand. Rocker cover is a new one. now a real dumb ass question is there a way around it should go, tabie thing top or bottom .
whats the tension on the rocker cover clip like? Our 1641 leaked like a sieve from one rocker cover (zero mileage Remtec motor) - the clip had no tension whatsoever
In the outer rim there's a "wave" about 1/2" long at one end. It's for pressure relief if your engine goes tits up or something. This goes towards the top.
Cheers Zed, you learn something every day. Now im assuming that you can see this wave as you are looking down into the inside of the cover on one of the corners on the outer edge, its a bit hard to make it out on the pic. These waves would make sense at the top as opposed to the wave I see on the outer edge looking from the side My clips are tight as a ducks arse.
at least you can rule the clip out - I was talking about these & it was mentioned there was a few "loose" clips about
I think that's the wavey bit - those covers look a bit crinkly all round - originals might be better.
Its a so called best quality ones. ive got and og old one in the garage will did it out and compare it tomorrow
on one recon engine i had years back leaked....what it turned out to be was the edge of the cover was catching on the side of the head. to get over this, what i did carefully was to bend out slightly the edges of the cover out so it went over the edge properly, therefore sitting flat .not bending or touching the surface the gaskit sits on. also over years of doing it, sometimes when "levering" the clip over the cover the cover can slip, or when offering up the cover the blinking gaskit would drop out of place but im sure you doing that ok. whats happend to the old cover....does the old cover leak??
Is it best to keep originals then, instead of replacing. Mine are rusty and was going to get some new ones but now I'm wondering?
well ive always had a dribble, so thought fitting a new cover would help. One day ill learn that modern repro is pants.
I bought New ones to replace bolt ons they are like those up their ,marmite, im fast thinking , im gona look for some old eez so if you get rid , yes please.
Old rusty ones on mine - clean inside though. They're heavier and pressed better and nobody sees them. Type 4's are trickier to fit than Type 1's = it's harder to get the bales on as space for your fingers is more limited. Try a piece of rag or cord threaded round the bale as a handle and pull to get it in place. The more you pull the less likely you are to smudge the gasket out of place.
as said original covers all day long, PIE did mine with new cork gaskets and just a smidge of grease and they are bone dry, they reckon all the shiny empi or new ones are marmite.
