hello guys was just wondering if anyone has had gear box driving noise its louder than the engine and gets louder as you get faster i have the 2lt t2 engine not sure what box . when you release the throttle the noise goes I've done some of the bushes in the gear lever to stop it touching any metal parts buts its really loud and annoying no noise when you dip the clutch either any got any ideas
Whilst my immediate reaction is the primary shaft bearing, like Snotty says a slightly better description of the noise could be helpfull. For example a high pitched squealing commensurate with engine rpm or a heavy rumble at road speed....that sort of thing. Does it change as you go through the gears or simply stay at a constant pitch but louder?
^^ + does it go if you press the clutch? You sure it's nothing daft like a worn mount? does it go or change if you corner?
gearbox level OK the noise gets louder faster you go noise disappears as you put clutch down .no noise when cornering so drive shafts OK .i thought something may be touching body work underneath making the noise come through. but maybe bearings will double check nothings touching . 1st gear ok as speed builds noise gets louder
if all rubber mounts are ok, the cv's are greese'd up ok and dont have massive play in them, theres plenty of gearoil in the box then it sounds like you have backlash in the diff most likely caused by diff side bearing play (check by lifting inner cv joint up and down) or the pinion bearing has failed allowing the pinion gear to float out of mesh which accelorating as said above this will damage the intermediate houing and nose cone. most importantly the longer you drive the van like this the worse the damage to the pinion shaft, crown wheel and the case will be! if its been like this a while if it is repaired now the box will always be a bit noiser than a good box as there will be a wear pattern on the teeth as the gears are hypoid
If its a loud whine increasing with road speed, not engine speed, and dissappears or fades when cornering then its wear in the differential ( crown wheel and pinion ). Drain a little gearbox oil out to see what appears. Steel fragments on the plug or bronze flecks in the oil...either of them then its gearbox out time. A differential will whine for a long time before it disintegrates but still not a good idea to leave...
